Genuine Works

The Book of James was written by the Senior Elder/Pastor of the church in the city of Jerusalem. Pastor James was the brother (half-brother) of Jesus. He was a recognized spiritual leader in his city and he was tremendously pragmatic when it came to his view of the Christian faith. He writes a short letter to the Christians scattered among the nations of the world and we learn from his words what 1st Century Christianity looked like, at least from the viewpoint of this very insightful pastor. Let’s look at them this morning…

Genuine Love

This morning’s message is entitled “genuine love” and the individual that I’d like to look to to give us insight is not a pastor but an apostle. His name is Simon Peter and the first thing I want you to remember about him is that he was a ragamuffin long before he was an apostle. His early faith in Jesus Christ resembled a checkerboard of good moves and mind-numbing blunders. One moment he’s actually walking on water in the Sea of Galilee because he wanted to do what his “rabbi” was doing and the next moment he nearly drowns. In one setting the Lord praised him for seeing what others could not see about “Christ the Messiah” and just a few minutes later Jesus calls Simon Peter “Satan” to highlight that Simon was deceived as to the plan and purposes of God upon the earth.

No Time to Lose

In most instances this simply requires a change of heart, a change of perspective. An understanding that although we are just one person on this planet made up of billions of people, God knows who you are and he created you for his purposes, both now and in eternity.
Here are Five Nuggets of Truth …
The work of our hands, our occupation and other tasks, is strenuous and both a burden and a gift from God
Our work finds expression in nearly every season of life
God has put eternity in the hearts of men
What we put our hands to on this earth has eternal fingerprints
God has made it this way so we will praise him and honor him

Salvation: The Reward

This morning I’ve entitled my message “Salvation: The Reward” and I want to discuss four things that I believe make salvation the most amazing gift that anyone of us could ever possess. These are four components, four benefits, four aspects within salvation that offers every believer the means to live a victorious Christian life, regardless of what life throws at you along our individual walk of faith. A Purpose that's Inspiring A Presence that's Restoring A Power that's Overcoming A Peace that's Eternal

Salvation: The Journey

Adam (the first man) was a Son of God by creation. Jesus Christ was the Son of God by nature. You and I are sons and daughters of God by grace. Grace is something you can never get, but can only be given. You can’t earn it. You don’t deserve it. And you can’t make grace happen any more than you can bring about your own physical birth. The traditional definition of grace is that it is the unmerited favor of God. And to counteract the reality of our fallen nature and our bondage to the sin nature inside of us, God’s grace courts us from the moment of our birth.

Salvation: The Gift

This morning I want to speak about this incredibly valuable gift of salvation that God has deposited into jars of clay, tabernacles of flesh that are (as the Apostle Paul tells us) wasting away. Today’s message is entitled, “Salvation: The Gift.” And in a culture that puts a premium on items of value, I want to spend some time talking about the most valued and treasured gift any of us own, our eternal salvation, and make abundantly clear that this amazing gift is just that, a gift.

Rest Stop

Now we know from all of God’s Word that “work” is not dismissed as being of little or no value, quite the opposite. But this is the type of thing that I want to address as we look at the benefits of living a balanced life. Jesus is not suggesting to us that worship is the only component in life and that we should devote all of our time to it. But he is telling us that that work must be put on hold at times so that we do make time for other things. What are some of those “other things?” The dynamics I’m speaking about this morning is the journey of balancing work and rest, worship and play in the day-to-day living out of our lives.

Moving Forward in 2010

The Apostle Paul in our opening text was not making a “New Year’s Resolution” when he penned these verses. He was not experiencing a mid-life crisis and neither was he telling us how to successfully enjoy the senior years of life. What he was doing is giving us a written declaration of how he approached life. He was revealing to the church at Philippi a personal standard by which he lived. A standard I suggest to you that is appropriate at any time of the year and one that seems even more appropriate as be conclude 2009 and begin 2010.

Christmas Lessons

The first Christmas was the most amazing miracle ever to occur on the fact of this planet. The main characters could never have imagined that they had been hand picked by God long before they were ever born to be participants in this miracle. We can only imagine their private and personal thoughts. What we can do, however, is look back at this amazing moment when human history and divine intervention locked hands. There are four eternal lessons of that first Christmas and that’s the focus of this morning’s message.

New Wineskins

Matthew 9:17
"Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
Relating this very natural process to the life and ministry of Jesus Christ and any local church (specifically, Christ’s Chapel) is the focus of today’s message.

Don't Waste Your Life

Pastor Terry featured a quote from John Piper's book Don't Waste Your Life. What would it mean to waste my life? That was a burning question. Or, more positively, what would it mean to live well— not to waste life, but to . . .? How to finish that sentence was the question. I was not even sure how to put the question into words, let alone what the answer might be. What was the opposite of not wasting my life? “To be successful in a career”? Or “to be maximally happy”? Or “to accomplish something great?” Or “to find the deepest meaning and significance”? Or “to help as many people as possible”? Or “to serve Christ to the full”? Or “to glorify God in all I do”? Or was there a point, a purpose, a focus, an essence to life that would fulfill every one of those dreams?”

What's the Will of God for My Life?

What's the will of God for my Life? Pastor Terry addresses the question we all face with a roadmap for the most important matters in life. The key is that we keep moving forward. We never give up. Pastor Terry looks at the life of Christ from Matthew chapter 4: following the character of Christ, living free from slavery to sin, engaging with God's word, responding to human suffering.

Connect 4 Prayer

I find it interesting and inspiring to discover that Jesus surrendered to God this group of disciples and the success of the kingdom throughout the ages in John 17. Jesus had taught them these three basic principles and he then shows them the 4th and final truth by praying an incredible prayer. In essence, he gave to God the ultimate responsibility for the church, as he knew he had done all that he could do.

Connect 4 Unity

Pastor Terry quotes Rick Warren as part of the theme for this week's sermon: “It is your job to protect the unity of your church. Unity in the church is so important that the New Testament gives more attention to it than to either heaven or hell. God deeply desires that we experience oneness and harmony with each other.

Connect 4 Bearing Fruit

John records Jesus' words regarding our need to "bear fruit" - Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself: it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."

Memorial Day 2009

I genuinely would like to say thank you to those of you either in our congregation or your loved ones, who by choice or through the draft, served this country and placed yourselves in a possible life threatening situation.  I’ve never had to make that type of decision and I’m very grateful to live in a country where so many before my time, and even after my time, said “Yes” and served this country with dignity and honor.

Lessons from the Journey

In the tradition and spirit of Joshua and the children of Israel, I’d like to learn from their journey and this morning do a sampling of what they did. Let’s walk back into our history, acknowledging the presence and provision of the Lord; take hold of that history and then turn our focus on the future.

Genuine Faith - Week 3
