The Church Then and Now-Thessalonians
Sunday/Nov/29 2009
Long before Jesus stood on this mountainside and gravity lost its hold on his body, Old Testament prophets had predicted the coming of a Messiah. By this time the Jews as a whole had made their decision and rejected Jesus as that Messiah and set in motion the course of events that led to his crucifixion. To this day Jewish theology denies his resurrection and continues to look for the first coming of a Messiah. For Christians around the world, however, we likewise are looking for a coming Messiah but that Messiah is the same Jesus that ascended here in Acts 1 and it’s the same Jesus these two angels said would come again. And the prophets predict the second coming of Messiah will be accompanied by events upon this planet never witnessed beforehand. It’s almost as if the earth turns upon itself and there is a season of unparalleled distress. Listen to this week's podcast here or download the .mp3 file to your computer.
The Church Then and Now-Philippians
Sunday/Nov/08 2009
Practical Application: Philippians is Paul’s happiest letter. And the happiness is infectious. Before we’ve read a dozen lines, we begin to feel the joy ourselves—the dance of words and the exclamations of delight have a way of getting inside us. But happiness is not a word we can understand by looking it up in the dictionary. In fact, none of the qualities of the Christian life can be learned out of a book. Something more like apprenticeship is required, being around someone who out of years of devoted discipline shows us, by his or her entire life, what it is. The Church Then and Now-Ephesians
Sunday/Nov/01 2009
Practical Application: Perhaps more than any other book of the Bible, the book of Ephesians emphasizes the connection between sound doctrine and right practice in the Christian life. Far too many people ignore "theology" and instead want to only discuss things that are "practical." In Ephesians, Paul argues that theology is practical. In order to live out God's will for us in our lives practically, we must first understand who we are in Christ doctrinally.Listen to this week's podcast here or download the .mp3 file to your computer.
The Church Then and Now-Galatians
Sunday/Oct/18 2009
Religion is restrictive. Before we know Christ as our personal savior we are “slaves” to sin. The law condemned us and proclaimed us guilty of death and hell. Why would anyone that has been set free from that type of pseudo-relationship with God want to go back to be a slave again?Listen to this week's podcast here or download the .mp3 file to your computer.
The Church Then and Now-Corinthians
Sunday/Oct/11 2009
Our goal over the next six weeks is to look at the six churches of the New Testament that the Apostle Paul pioneered, spent some extended time with, eventually wrote letters to and on some occasions traveled back to visit these developing congregations. And when we today read these letters it becomes obvious Paul had to address some of the matters of church life at that specific day and time and so our journey will be to compare church life then to church life now.Listen to this week's podcast or download the .mp3 file to your computer.
